Principal's Message

Welcome to Pettis County R-V’s new website.  This is a tool for students, parents, and teachers.   I could not be more excited about being a part of the Northwest High School community.

As the building administrator, I will aspire to establish a school culture and educational program conducive to student learning and socialization and one that promotes student achievement.  I believe communication is important in this process.  As with any team or staff, communication is vital in goals being met.  In an educational setting, how the organization communicates dictates to student achievement.  My organizational plan includes communication as the foundation.  Whether it is between administrator and teacher, student and teacher, teacher to teacher, or parent to teacher, there should be a strict chain that is followed.

In my opinion, principals wear many hats within a school building.  Often times, they are the face of the building and one of the few faces of the district.  Administrators have the ability to lead and set an example of a positive school environment.  However, I believe my primary role falls into five categories:

  • Instructional Leader – While I am not in the classroom at all times, I will set the tone for the classroom for students and instructors.  In the end, my goal is to be the leader and example for student learning.
  • Vision – I will always have a focus on the past, present, and future.  I consider myself the leader of the learning environment which helps shape this learning organization’s vision through my example.  Furthermore, I also consider it my responsibility to promote the school’s vision within the community.
  • Staff Management – I will ensure the students and community have the best teachers who work with the latest tools.   Teachers are held accountable for positive results and worked with when improvements are needed.
  • Discipline – Students are held accountable for both the negative and positive choices they make while at school.  Student safety is one of the main concerns.
  • Facilities – I will ensure the facilities are safe for the students and technologically advanced for the teachers to serve the students to the best of their ability.

I have earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English/Writing, criminology, and sociology from Drury University.  I also hold a Master of Science Degree from Missouri State University in Secondary Guidance and Counseling as well as a Master of Science Degree from Missouri State University in Secondary Educational Administration.  I have been a teacher, high school counselor, A+ coordinator, assessment coordinator, and coach.  My experience with assessment has provided me with direct knowledge of the Missouri Assessment Program as well as the Missouri School Improvement Program.  Assessment data in general, is something that is only useful if we utilize it.  My goal will be to utilize the data we have to drive instruction.

If you have any questions, I encourage you to contact me at (660) 827-0774 or by email at ddawson@northwest.k12.mo.us

Sincerely,
David Dawson
